In the last couple of months there
has been a lot of discussions concerning the concept of
AD syringes. The AD syringe was born in the late
eighties, where it was discovered that standard
disposable syringes were being used for multiple
injections. The definition of AD was that it must not be
possible to reuse the syringe without the use of tools
or excessive force. It is a very unfortunate development
that syringes that can easily be reused without the use
of tools or excessive force are approved by WHO and
allowed on the market through the international aid
organizations. The standpoint that is being promoted is
that certain syringes are safe if the instructions for
use are being followed. True enough, but the sad fact is
that sometimes instructions for use are not being
followed. If it was a matter of following instructions,
a normal disposable syringes saying "discard after
single use" should be sufficient....... The
established world of serious syringe manufacturers and
the aid organizations must stop this craziness now - 15
years of works by Unicef, WHO and the industry is being
jeopardized - and that is not in the best interest of
anyone except a few individuals.
